The name translates to "the way of harmonious energy." ### Philosophy The essence of Hapkido is based on three principles: 1. **Circle** - Each technique is executed in a fluid, circular motion 2. **Flow** - A single technique flows seamlessly into the next; unlike a knot, one technique should not leave you in a position where continuation is impossible 3. **Harmony** - The energy of the opponent is used in harmony with the practitioner Hapkido is a complete art form that merges positive and negative aspects -- healing at one end of the spectrum and combat at the other. Oriental medicine profoundly influences training at Eagle Hapkido. ### Techniques Hapkido combines both hard and soft techniques, including: - **Joint locks and manipulation** - Twisting, breaking, and healing of the body's joints - **Throws** - Using joint manipulation, balance, weight transfer, and timing - **Kicks** - Single, double, and triple kicks; jump kicks and sweeps - **Punching and hand strikes** - Knife hand, arrow hand, and other strikes with energy focused throughout the motion - **Pressure point attacks** - Using the body's 14 meridians (12 minor, 2 major) for both combat and healing - **Weapons** - Long staff, middle staff, short staff, cane, rope, throwing knife; the principle is that anything held in one's hand is a weapon - **Breaking** - Two styles: inner strength/power, and speed/timing - **Internal ki (chi) training** - For power and healing ### Training at Eagle Hapkido - Classes are open to men and women of all ages - Children may join once they have reached between 10-15 years old, based on maturity level - A holistic approach is used: multiple techniques are taught with analysis of their use and execution - Students wear white pants, white shirt, and a belt indicating rank; training is barefoot (flat martial arts shoes optional) - Full-body contact sparring begins at yellow belt level; includes grappling, punching, kicking, throwing, pressure points, joint manipulation, and ground fighting - Protective gear is optional during sparring ### Belt Testing There are no term tests at Eagle Hapkido. Testing is performed according to an individual's progress and is designed to challenge capabilities and inspire desire for progression. The entire testing procedure, including selection and grading, is performed by Grandmaster Hwang. ## Pages on This Site - [Home](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/) - Overview of Eagle Hapkido Academy, Toronto's Hapkido and martial arts school - [Hapkido History (Overview)](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/hapkido-history-toronto.php) - Introduction to the history of Hapkido and the school - [Grandmaster Hwang In Shik](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/hwang-in-shik.php) - Biography and history of Grandmaster Hwang In Shik - [History of Hapkido](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/hapkido-history.php) - Detailed history and philosophy of Hapkido as a martial art - [The Club](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/martial-arts-toronto.php) - About Eagle Hapkido Academy as a martial arts club in Toronto - [Eagle Hapkido](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/hapkido-toronto.php) - Information about the Eagle Hapkido school - [Training Info](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/hapkido-classes-toronto.php) - Detailed training information including punching, kicking, joints, throwing, pressure points, weapons, breaking, fighting, and testing - [Class Schedule](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/toronto-hapkido-schedule.php) - Weekly class schedule and hours of operation - [Location](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/eagle-hapkido-toronto.php) - Address, map, parking, and TTC transit directions - [Movies](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/hwang-inshik-movies.php) - Overview of Hwang In Shik's film appearances - [The Young Master](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/young-master.php) - About the 1980 Jackie Chan film featuring Hwang In Shik - [Dragon Lord](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/dragon-lord.php) - About the 1982 Jackie Chan film featuring Hwang In Shik - [Gallery](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/hapkido-gallery.php) - Movie clips and images - [Choosing Schools](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/hapkido-information.php) - Guidance on choosing a Hapkido school - [Martial Tradition](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/tradition-martial-arts.php) - The role of tradition in martial arts - [Seminars](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/hapkido-seminars.php) - Information on upcoming seminars with Grandmaster Hwang - [Contact](https://www.eaglehapkido.com/contactus.php) - Contact form, phone number, address, and map ## Contact Information - **Phone**: 416-466-9259 - **Address**: 781 Danforth Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M4J 1L2 - **Website**: https://www.eaglehapkido.com - **Contact Page**: https://www.eaglehapkido.com/contactus.php
